The amount of capital raised in growth equity private placements shrank last quarter as the volatile stock market made investors hesitant.
The amount raised in unregistered private placements by small-cap companies rose by almost 60% last year, but the market for registered private placements by small cap companies declined.
The equity financing market for emerging growth companies grew 11% in deal volume and 18% in total dollars last quarter, driven by investors’ enthusiasm for biotech companies.
But biotech deal flow has slowed in recent weeks as the market correction led investors to avoid risky stocks, raising concerns going forward.
H.C. Wainwright & Co. was the most active placement agent in the private-investment-in-public-equity market last quarter, arranging at least 45 PIPEs that raised a total of $932.6 million.
